2008 Evening of Gospel Choirs |
|
The Evening of Gospel Choirs is held annually at Voorhees Chapel on the campus of Douglass Residential College in celebration of Black History Month, usually held the last Saturday in February. This year's concert featured the Mississippi Blind Boys, one of the most popular and influential post-war gospel quartets. Powered by the vocals of lead singer Archie Brownlee, their single "Our Father" reached the Billboard R&B charts in the early 1950s, one of the first gospel records to do so. Also singing were the Lumzy Sisters of Mississippi, the Mass Choir of Antioch Christian Church of New Brunswick, and the Unity Choir from the First Baptist Church of South Bound Brook. Serving as Master of Ceremonies was Cheryl Wilson. The free concert was sponsored by the Campus Deans of Douglass, College Avenue, and Livingston, with the Office of Undergraduate Education & Academic Engagement and Programming of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The 2008 Evening of Gospel Choirs was produced by Angus Kress Gillespie and Arthur Thigpen. Student officers of the New Jersey Folk Festival produced the program booklet, posted traffic signs, worked as lighting technicians, and served as ushers. Please check back in December for information on next year's event or for more information call 732-932-9174.
